These are forms of graphite which are bonded together by impurities in different ways. Graphite is made of sheets or layers of covalently bonded carbon atoms arranged in hexagons. However, the bonding between the layers is very weak, allowing them to slip over one another giving graphite its excellent lubricating characteristic. Besides, graphite has the following properties because of its special structure. It enjoys high temperature resistance, good conductivity and thermal conductivity, plasticity as well as thermal shock resistance. When at room temperature, it could withstand drastic changes of temperature without damage, let alone crack. Graphite also possesses strong chemical stability for corrosive acid, alkali and organic solvents at room temperature. Graphite has good toughness and can be rolled into very thin section.
Due to its excellent features as above, graphite is regarded as refractory material as it has the advantages of high temperature resistance and high strength. It is mainly used to manufacture graphite crucible and graphite seal in the metallurgical industry. Owing to its lubricating characteristic, graphite is also usually used as lubricant in the mechanical industry. In addition, after special processing, graphite enjoys the advantages of resistant to corrosion, good thermal conductivity and low permeability. So it is widely used in the manufacturing of the heat exchanger, the reaction tank, condenser, burning tower, absorption tower, cooler, heater, filter, and pump equipment. What is more, graphite has gradually replaced copper as the preferred material of EDM electrode as result of its incomparable advantages. That is, compared with copper, graphite also offers faster processing speed, less discharge consumption, more easily grinding and polishing apart from lighter in weight, low and stable cost.
New uses are being found for the graphite itself with the development of science and technology. Graphite has become a great energy-saving material in many industries, including atomic energy Industry and defense industry. It is believed that graphite applications will expand constantly.
